Walmart finally joins the mobile payment revolution, rolling out Apple Pay and Google Pay across its US stores.
After years of holding out, Walmart is finally embracing Apple Pay and Google Pay. The retail giant announced on Friday that it will introduce tap-to-pay capabilities at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting August 24th, with a full rollout to all US stores by the end of 2026 and gas stations by mid-2027.
This move marks a significant shift for Walmart, which has long resisted supporting these popular mobile payment methods. Instead, the company backed the now-defunct CurrentC payment service and later launched its own Walmart Pay in 2016, which relies on QR codes for transactions. “We’re excited to offer our customers more ways to pay,” said John Furner, President and CEO of Walmart U.S., in a statement.
Walmart’s decision comes as no surprise to industry analysts, who have long questioned the retailer’s absence from the mobile payment ecosystem. As one of the last major holdouts, Walmart’s adoption of Apple Pay and Google Pay signals a broader acceptance of these platforms, which have become ubiquitous in retail settings.
The shift also reflects changing consumer preferences. According to a 2025 survey by Statista, 68% of U.S. consumers prefer contactless payments, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By integrating Apple Pay and Google Pay, Walmart is aligning itself with these evolving expectations.
For Walmart shoppers, the change means greater convenience. Tap-to-pay technology reduces checkout times and offers a more seamless shopping experience. It also eliminates the need to open a separate app or scan a QR code, as required by Walmart Pay.
Competitors, meanwhile, are likely watching closely. Walmart’s move could pressure other retailers to enhance their own payment options, further accelerating the decline of cash and traditional card transactions.
Walmart’s resistance to Apple Pay and Google Pay dates back to its involvement with CurrentC, a mobile payment platform launched in 2014. Backed by a consortium of retailers, including Walmart, CurrentC aimed to challenge established players like Apple and Google by offering lower transaction fees. However, the service failed to gain traction and was discontinued in 2016.
Following CurrentC’s collapse, Walmart pivoted to its proprietary Walmart Pay system. While it gained some traction, the platform never achieved the widespread adoption of its competitors. By finally embracing Apple Pay and Google Pay, Walmart is acknowledging the limitations of its earlier strategy.
As the retail landscape continues to evolve, Walmart’s latest move underscores the importance of adaptability. For millions of shoppers, the change promises a faster, more convenient way to pay—and for Walmart, it’s a step toward staying relevant in an increasingly digital world.
Walmart plans to roll out support for Apple Pay and Google Pay to all U.S. stores by the end of 2026.
Walmart initially backed the CurrentC payment service, aiming to challenge Apple and Google, and later launched its own Walmart Pay, delaying the adoption of competing platforms.
Shoppers will experience faster and more convenient checkout options, as tap-to-pay technology eliminates the need for separate apps or QR codes.
