A devastating heatwave in Sudan's Red Sea State has claimed 16 lives and left 160 severely affected, sparking urgent health responses.
A devastating heatwave in Sudan's Red Sea State has claimed 16 lives and left 160 severely affected, according to local health authorities and Sudanese officials in Khartoum. The crisis, which unfolded on August 21, 2026, has highlighted the growing challenges of extreme weather events in the region. Social media images depict overwhelmed hospitals and residents struggling to cope with temperatures exceeding 45°C (113°F).
The Red Sea State, known for its arid climate, has long faced heat-related challenges, but this year’s heatwave has been particularly brutal. Local health officials reported that the majority of fatalities were elderly individuals and those with pre-existing health conditions. “We’re seeing an unprecedented surge in heatstroke cases,” said Dr. Fatima Hassan, a senior physician at Port Sudan Hospital. “Our facilities are stretched beyond capacity, and many patients are arriving in critical condition.”
Sudanese authorities have launched an emergency response, distributing water, setting up cooling centers, and deploying medical teams to affected areas. However, the lack of infrastructure and resources has hampered relief efforts, leaving many vulnerable communities at risk.
Sudan’s location in the Sahel region makes it particularly susceptible to climate change impacts, including rising temperatures and prolonged droughts. Historically, the country has grappled with environmental challenges, from desertification to water scarcity. The current heatwave is part of a broader trend of extreme weather events that have intensified over the past decade.
According to a 2025 report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Sudan is among the top 10 countries most affected by climate change. The report warns that without urgent global action, such events will become more frequent and severe, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.
For residents of Red Sea State, the heatwave has disrupted daily life. Schools have been closed, outdoor work has become hazardous, and access to clean water remains a critical issue. Many families are relying on makeshift solutions, such as wet cloths and shade, to combat the heat. “We’ve never experienced anything like this before,” said Ahmed Omar, a local farmer. “Our crops are dying, and even staying indoors feels like a battle.”
The crisis also underscores the need for long-term solutions, including investment in renewable energy, improved healthcare infrastructure, and public awareness campaigns about heat safety.
Sixteen people have died, with 160 others severely affected in Red Sea State as of August 21, 2026.
Authorities are distributing water, setting up cooling centers, and deploying medical teams, though resource limitations are hindering full-scale relief.
Sudan’s Sahel location makes it vulnerable to rising temperatures and droughts, with UNEP ranking it among the top 10 climate-affected countries.
